For the WNTA-TV series, see Jazz Party (TV series). Jazz Party is a album by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra which contains a "formidable gallery of jazz stars" guesting, including Dizzy Gillespie and Jimmy Rushing (formerly the vocalist for Count Basie). It featured also a 9-strong percussion section on two tracks.

First of all, the album stands out for its superb musical quality. It also marks a very rare trio session in the otherwise prolific discography of Duke Ellington. The album is best known, however, for being Duke’s only true recorded collaboration with two much younger jazz geniuses: Charles Mingus and Max Roach.

Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis recorded almost exclusively at the 30th Street Studio during his years under contract to Columbia, including his album Kind of Blue (). Other noteworthy jazz musicians having recorded in this place: Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck.

Aug 02,  · I second the recommendation of Jazz Party. It's all great, but two tracks ("Malletoba Spank" and "Tymperturbably Blue" feature "nine symphonic percussionists on tympani, vibes, marimbas and xylophones." Unlike anything the Duke did before of after, wonderful recording! There's also a swinging track featuring Mr. Five-by-Five, Jimmy Rushing.

Ellington’s party trick here was to invite a bunch of percussionists along to prove once and for all that a full set of Tympanis and a bank of Xylophones belong at the back of an orchestra. Malletoba Spank and Tymperturbably Blue are the curious pieces Ellington and Strayhorn dreamed up .
